Private pay
Most families start by paying privately from savings, retirement income, or the sale of a home. Ask every provider for a written monthly rate and a list of what is included, such as meals, laundry, medication help and personal care.
Long-term care insurance
If your loved one has a long-term care insurance policy, call the insurer early. Many policies cover care in a licensed adult family home, but they may require paperwork from a doctor and a waiting period before benefits begin.
Veterans benefits
Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA pension benefits with Aid and Attendance, which can help pay for care. A county veterans service officer can help with the application at no charge.
Washington Medicaid
Washington's Medicaid long-term care programs, managed through DSHS Home and Community Services, can pay for care in an adult family home for people who meet financial and care-need requirements. Not every home accepts Medicaid, and approval takes time, so ask providers directly and start the application early.
